The IPL was founded to assist people by providing services, teaching individuals to work in a technological world, building new resource technology, sharing what they know with other professionals, conducting research into new ways to provide service, and developing a plan for long term sustainability.

The NYPL has both a vast collection of scholarly research materials and a large network of community libraries at its disposal. It boasts some of the world most comprehensive collections that rival the British Library, the Library of Congress, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
